Prominent Ear Definition and Cause?
Ear aesthetic interventions are performed to reduce the size of the ear or to correct the prominent ear condition. The condition in which the auricle is curved forward more than normal is called ‘Prominent Ear’.
Insufficient development of the Y-shaped fold in the auricle or the cartilage part being wider than normal is usually the main reason.
Most of the ear development (80%) is completed by the age of 5-6 years. For this reason, such surgeries can be performed before starting school. Doing so at this age can prevent the negativities that may occur especially in the child’s mental state. However, it is also possible to perform the surgery at a later age.
Prominent Ear Surgery
Prominent Ear Surgery can be performed with general anesthesia in young children and local anesthesia in adults. The operation takes about 1-1.5 hours. Although different techniques are applied, behind-the-ear incisions are preferred because surgical scars are not seen. In the operation plan, different steps are applied according to the problems in the ear. In the technique frequently applied, the ear skin is opened from the back, the ear cartilages are fixed, some parts are thinned and the cartilages are folded and reshaped with fixed stitches.
When deemed necessary, cartilages are taken from various regions. After the cartilage membranes are closed, the excess in the skin is removed and sutured.
Post-Operative Process
Stitches are removed between 8-12 days. After the surgery, the patient is followed with a closed dressing for 2-3 days, then the dressing is opened and a special headband is applied to the patient.
After that, patients wear the special band when they are at home for 4 weeks. The auricle can be restored to the desired extent depending on the anatomical dimensions.
